Marek’s involvement with Indian Creek began in 2007 with construction work, during which we removed a concrete channel liner, built a retaining wall, and revegetated the area with a variety of native plants and trees. We then worked with MMSD to develop a comprehensive vegetative maintenance plan and a seeding plan. Our stewardship team implemented this plans under several contracts starting in 2008 under MMSD and most recently in 2015-present with the Village of Fox Point. Along with mowing and selective weeding, we’ve conducted several prescribed burns to reduce the cattail population. Cattail was further controlled with the use of selective herbicide treatment through 2018. Invasive species control was expanded in 2018 to include mitigation efforts for cutleaf teasel (Dipsacus laciniatus) and glossy buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula).

Native vegetation cover has become visibly higher and more diverse throughout the project area. Dominant native species include cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis), water plantain (Alisma sp.), blue flag iris (Iris versicolor), goldenrod species (Solidago spp.), aster species (Aster spp.) and rush species (Schoenoplectus spp., Scirpus spp.).

The 30^th Street Industrial Corridor is undergoing an extensive transformation from an underutilized former manufacturing region into a thriving hub of economic and social activity. As part of the initiative, Marek is working with Clean Wisconsin to provide Green Infrastructure education and resources to the neighborhood. This entailed designing and assisting with the installation for three community and five residential rain gardens, training of MMSD interns, assistance selecting ideal sites for community and residential rain gardens, and follow up visits to assist homeowners with maintenance.

The City of Brown Deer’s Neighborhood Outreach and Green Infrastructure Installation initiative’s aim is to educate the community about the importance of green infrastructure and to gain support for its implementation. Marek is working with URS Corporation to help meet the MMSD’s goals to capture stormwater through green infrastructure. Marek’s services included attending and speaking at several social events and workshops to engage citizens in determining potential locations for rain gardens and rain barrels. Marek also assisted in the installation of green infrastructure, including 13 rain gardens on privately and publicly-owned property.
