Planters at Dubbel Dutch Hotel

The Dubbel Dutch Hotel is a historic double mansion, turned boutique hotel located in downtown Milwaukee. Built in 1898, this beautiful building sat underutilized for many years and was eventually abandoned altogether until new owners came along who saw its potential to once again be something great. The hotel opened in 2020 after some much-needed restoration work, and has already become a popular destination in the city.

In 2021 our stewardship team installed six planters on the property to add some greenery to this urban landscape. Each planter is unique, containing a variety of sedges, grasses, shrubs, forbs, and even trees native to the area. Some of the species you’ll spot in these planters include quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides), eastern star sedge (Carex radiata), common witch-hazel (Hamamelis virginiana), and purple prairie clover (Dalea purpurea). These plants were chosen due to their being low-maintenance and able to survive in an urban environment, in addition to their ornamental value.

In winter, we decorated the planters with festive boughs, winterberry, and reindeer moss.
