In 2018, Marek Landscaping, LLC installed a 5,730 square foot switchback trail at a bluff-side residence in Bayside, WI. The trail was constructed with reclaimed antique granite cobblestone from old Milwaukee roads set in a permeable base of crushed quartz. It features a retaining wall made from Black Locust that was harvested and milled on-site with custom designed geogrid reinforcement and built-in limestone overlooks. Custom made copper caps atop the Black Locust posts along the trail to add a decorative element to this rustic landscape while preventing the posts from splitting over the long-term.

Special consideration was taken to bluff dynamics and site ecology throughout the project to minimized site impact as much as possible during construction. Other improvements to the property, including invasive species management and supplemental native woody and herbaceous plantings. Our Stewardship team has been keeping the new native plantings happy and healthy through regular maintenance for the past several years.

The Garden Room, located in Shorewood, Wisconsin, is a retail shop specializing in garden tools, fountains, landscape ornaments, and antiques. The client sought to convert the roof into a garden to display retail items, build a greenhouse, and encourage newer urban landscape concepts. Marek Landscaping was completed the green roof construction. Construction started with preparing the roof floor, assembling a drainage system, and a light-weight base for construction. Layers of sand, gravel, and engineered soil were placed and hand-compacted for planting and hardscape construction. Planters and sculptures were placed, and brick walkways were built from reclaimed clay pavers from a Gary, Indiana railroad depot.

This project involved the construction of three flagstone patios, 150 feet of black locust boardwalk, a covered terrace overlook with green roof, a water feature, and a dry stack stone boathouse with a copper shingle roof and firepit. Other aspects of this project included steep slope restoration and the planting of over 2,200 native grasses, sedges, and forbs.

The upper 100 square foot flagstone patio follows a black locust plank boardwalk down the bluff to a 260 square foot covered terrace overlook. The overlook patio was constructed with a mixture of flagstone and black locust log “cookies”. The back retaining wall consists of black locust logs and the cedar log roof was covered in engineered soil with coir matting and planted with nearly 200 plugs of native grasses and forbs. Black locust stairs continue down the bluff from the overlook and descend to the covered boathouse. The boathouse was constructed of dry stack stone with a Douglas fir beam roof finished with custom copper shingles. The boathouse faces 500 square feet of flagstone patio and a custom fire pit with five large limestone rocks for seating.

Another fun and challenging aspect of this project was the rerouting of a natural spring on the property to create a recirculating water feature. Additionally, Marek utilized a steep slope restoration technique that uses a compost- based bio-engineered soil matrix with close to 50 species of native plant grasses, sedges, and forbs to increase initial stability, weed resistance, and early native plant germination.

The retaining wall is tiered and sectioned to create several terraces for planting were there was not space to do so previously.

Black Locust is one of our favorite materials to create with. Durable and rot-resistant, it makes an excellent choice of lumber for boardwalks, decks, posts for handrails or lighting, and various other structures, such as this retaining wall. We typically harvest wood this invasive tree in the Winter months alongside the removal of other non-desirable woody species.

Built in 1898, this beautiful building sat underutilized for many years and was eventually abandoned altogether until new owners came along who saw its potential to once again be something great. The hotel opened in 2020 after some much-needed restoration work, and has already become a popular destination in the city.

In 2021 our stewardship team installed six planters on the property to add some greenery to this urban landscape. Each planter is unique, containing a variety of sedges, grasses, shrubs, forbs, and even trees native to the area. Some of the species you’ll spot in these planters include quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides), eastern star sedge (Carex radiata), common witch-hazel (Hamamelis virginiana), and purple prairie clover (Dalea purpurea). These plants were chosen due to their being low-maintenance and able to survive in an urban environment, in addition to their ornamental value.

In winter, we decorated the planters with festive boughs, winterberry, and reindeer moss.

Previously a concrete drainage corridor, Indian Creek has been deconstructed and naturalized. It has been restored to a series of basins and linear infiltration swales composed of wet mesic prairie vegetation native to the area. The system was designed to slow the flow of storm water runoff and improve the area’s water holding capacity. Deep rooted native plants reduce flooding potential and improve water quality as the storm water infiltrates the ground layer.

Marek’s involvement with Indian Creek began in 2007 with construction work, during which we removed a concrete channel liner, built a retaining wall, and revegetated the area with a variety of native plants and trees. We then worked with MMSD to develop a comprehensive vegetative maintenance plan and a seeding plan. Our stewardship team implemented this plans under several contracts starting in 2008 under MMSD and most recently in 2015-present with the Village of Fox Point. Along with mowing and selective weeding, we’ve conducted several prescribed burns to reduce the cattail population. Cattail was further controlled with the use of selective herbicide treatment through 2018. Invasive species control was expanded in 2018 to include mitigation efforts for cutleaf teasel (Dipsacus laciniatus) and glossy buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula).

Native vegetation cover has become visibly higher and more diverse throughout the project area. Dominant native species include cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis), water plantain (Alisma sp.), blue flag iris (Iris versicolor), goldenrod species (Solidago spp.), aster species (Aster spp.) and rush species (Schoenoplectus spp., Scirpus spp.).

The branch was modernized to offer the latest technology as well as updated departments. In addition to the interior improvements, the property’s exterior was also improved. Marek worked as part of a multidisciplinary design team led by architectural firm Engberg Anderson to provide landscape architecture services for the complete renovation of Tippecanoe Library. Components of the new design include permeable pavers, two bioswales that control stormwater on-site, a story garden, a community vegetable garden, a West Pocket park, a bus stop plaza, and terrace trees. Drought- and urban-tolerant prairie plants and Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides) were chosen for changing seasonal interest and the ability to adapt to the often harsh conditions of a built environment.

This universally accessible trail serves as a connection from the Oak Leaf Trail to the pedestrian trails along the Milwaukee River. Work began by surveying the proposed path elevations and carving out the rough path of the trail. Both Filtrexx and boulder retaining walls were constructed with minimal impact to the site. Planning, design, and construction work was performed in tandem with AmeriCorps crews, Milwaukee County Parks, and Urban Ecology Center Staff. The 500-foot long 4-foot wide trail weaves through a mesic woodland and floodplain forest.

The challenges of meeting grades, maintaining slope stability, and avoiding damage to trees and ground layer plants were met by utilizing compact equipment, state of the art methods, and highly skilled operators. Stabilization with the use of Filtrexx living walls and compost blankets allowed for bioengineering that favors the native plant community and suppresses weeds while minimizing synthetic geotextiles. Restoration work included several large ironwood trees, a range of woody understory plants, and a target sewn, high diversity, herbaceous ground layer seeding that spanned several slope aspects and plant community types.

Marek Landscaping, LLC was contacted by Milwaukee County Parks to perform emergency bluff stabilization and erosion control for a section of Lake Michigan’s bluff along North Lincoln Memorial Drive. The emergency stabilization measures included a compost blanket and Filtrexx slope interrupters, were in place three days after Marek was contacted, and successfully maintained the stability of the slope during a 2-inch storm event occurring shortly after completion. No runoff sediment was deposited onto the public bike path after the storm. Within less than a week the cover crop germinated further stabilizing the soil until the native plants were able to germinate.
