Ducks Unlimited Floating Island for Tern Habitat
As part of the Cat Island Restoration project, Marek Landscaping LLC recently constructed a floating island for Forster’s Tern habitat. The 27 by 30 foot island will provide Tern habitat along Cat Island where it will help promote Tern nesting in the area. The island includes 640 square feet of habitat and contains a 10’x17’ rectangular hole in the middle, which will support floating reeds during future installations. The island is planted with native wet prairie and sedge meadow plugs which among others include Hardstem Bulrush and Chairmaker’s Rush. In addition to the plugs, the island was seeded with a native wet-prairie seed mix distributed over the planting area.
